
Information about the Parent Council’s role

The Parent Council do many things in the background to support the school, our pupils and their families. Parent Councils have an important role to play in school improvement by ensuring that the parent/carer perspective is represented and taken into account.

What is the Parent Council?
The Parent Council helps to create an environment where all parents/carers know that their views matter, and where they feel confident and comfortable putting them forward. They work on behalf of all parents/carers to discuss educational matters that are of importance to all. We are a volunteer organisation.
What does the Parent Council do:
- Represent all the parent and carers at the school
- Represent the views of parents/carers wherever necessary
- Support the work of the school by contributing on school policies, plans, developments, improvements
- Ensure the parent perspective is taken into account
- Work in partnership with the school
- Provide a voice for parents/carers
- Support school/home partnerships
- Communicate regularly with parents
- Support improvements through discussion
- Help to establish and grow links in the wider community
- Capture unique and varied skills, interests, knowledge and experience of parents
- Support the recruitment of senior staff

Upcoming Parent Council meetings
All parents and carers are most welcome to attend Parent and Carer Council meetings. Coming along to a meeting is one way of ensuring that you’re fully involved in your child’s education.
The agenda for each meeting will vary but is likely to include:
- Head Teacher’s update,
- Parent Council Chair update,
- Treasurer update,
- Any specific discussion items like school curriculum, plans for the school year, concerns and any other business raised by parents and carers.
- Voting on funding decisions, or other decisions and so on.

The Parent Council will meet 5 or 6 times between August and June.

The provisional dates for session 2025/26 are below. Some meetings are in-person and some are on-line. If you wish to join one of the online meetings, please email the contact email address above, and we will send on a link to join.

AGM
The 2025 AGM was held at Dean Park Primary School on Monday 29th September. A review of the 2024/2025 year was included, the presentation is available below. The 2024 AGM presentation is also available.

1: Food bank outside Dean Park Nursery/Balerno Library;
